A magic show is easy to plan. Most of the work is in four decisions: the kind of magic, the space, the time slot and how far ahead you book. This guide walks through each one, with notes for homes, hotels and offices in Dubai.
Step 1: Pick the kind of magic
| Your event | Usual fit |
|---|---|
| Kids birthday party | A kids magic show, matched to the children's ages |
| Drinks reception or networking | Close-up magic among the guests |
| Seated dinner, gala or conference | A stage show or a mentalist |
| Adult party at home | Close-up magic, maybe with a short mind reading set |
If you are not sure, read about close-up magic, stage shows and mentalists.
Step 2: Tell the team who the guests are
The audience decides the material. Give the number of guests and their ages. For a kids party, the age spread matters most. A magician prepared for eight children aged five cannot simply switch to thirty children of mixed ages. Mention the language too: English, Arabic or both.
Step 3: Plan the space
Close-up magic. No stage. The magician needs room to move between groups and some light.
Kids show. A clear area of about 3 by 3 metres. Put a wall or backdrop behind the magician, so the children are not distracted by what is happening behind the act.
Stage show. A stage or a clear area facing the audience, with a microphone in a large room and light on the performer.
Step 4: Choose the time slot
- Kids party. Before the cake and the games, while the children are still fresh.
- Wedding. The drinks reception or the time while the couple has photos taken, for close-up magic. After dinner, for a show.
- Corporate event. Close-up magic during arrival. A stage set between programme items, never straight after a long speech.
- Adult party. Strolling magic as guests arrive, a short show once everyone is together.
Give the magician a fixed slot and one contact person on the day.
Step 5: Think about the weather
Between May and September, a midday outdoor show is hard on everyone. Villa gardens and lawns work before 10am or after 5pm. Indoor rooms, hotel function rooms and mall event spaces avoid wind and heat, and the sound carries better.
Step 6: Book at the right time
For a normal weekend kids party, 3 to 10 days ahead is usually enough. For Eid, National Day, the Christmas break and the last weekends before the summer holidays, book 3 to 4 weeks ahead. For a corporate event or a wedding, book as soon as the date is fixed.
Step 7: Check whether you need a permit
A private party at a home, villa or private hall does not need a Dubai DET entertainment permit. A public or ticketed event, a mall activation or a hotel function open to the public can. In those cases, the venue or the organiser usually handles it. Check with your venue before you confirm the date.
